I am very proud to be an artist.
With that said, I know I haven’t reached the point of creating what I would consider to be that one great piece of art. I am working towards something that puts a lasting impression on society. My work may be celebrated as “good art”, but until I contribute something to thought, the serious side of life, I will not be satisfied as an artist.
Art and creativity are ideas that cannot be turned on or off. They just come and that is only if we are fortunate. I didn’t say to myself one day, “this is my idea, and this is how I plan to translate it through my work." There is no equation for an idea, it just hits you like a ton of bricks and you’re lucky to know what to with that idea when it comes. I believe in myself, and I believe in my work; but I am kidding myself if I think that there is some great existential thought process going on in my head that only I can see.
I am not saying that my creativity is somehow turned off, or that I am not trying to create great work, I am just waiting to get hit by that ton of bricks and for my creativity to explode onto the canvas; my mind opened, and for the first time I am thinking in a new way about how art is made and what it can mean. I am tired of reading other artist’s statements and realizing by about the second sentence that the artist is trying to confuse the viewer and maybe see their work through their statement instead of letting the work speak for itself. Rather than confuse the masses with words, I am trying to do my craft to the best of my ability, or anyone’s ability for that matter.
My work is simple. It can be called large-scale atmospheric paintings. These paintings are highly realistic but are also somewhat abstract in traditional thinking, accomplished by changing the view on the canvas from the typical horizontal landscape to an undefined section that completely lacks a horizon.
I have made the canvas larger than almost any person hoping to surround the viewer and eventually plan to increase the size of the canvas to overwhelm the viewer. I execute these paintings to the best of my ability, and my inspiration is right in front of me. I do not think I am breaking down any barriers with this idea, merely hoping to make a piece of art that I can be proud of by challenging myself to reach those barriers, break them down, and to be better than anybody ever has been.
